Is your homeschool space looking like a tornado hit it? Are you having trouble trying to find anything?
Having a disorganized homeschool space can add to your feeling of overwhelm. Aside from that, not knowing where you can find something wastes a lot of your precious time as a Homeschool CEO.
If you’re finding yourself in this situation now, don’t despair. Take the time to do a little spring cleaning and organizing this week with these simple tips.
1. Declutter.
There are so many educational materials in the market these days. Sometimes, in our desire to provide the best education for our kids, we end up buying all the things. Before we know it, our homeschool area ends up looking like a disaster zone full of things we don’t really use.
The first step in organizing is always to declutter. Look at all the items you have. Throw away anything that is broken and can’t be repaired. Fix those that can still be fixed. Donate usable items that you don’t use. You’ll be left with just the things that you need and love.
2. Sort and group like items together.
It’s easier to find the things you need when like items are grouped together. Some groupings you might need include the following:
- Curriculum
- Books
- Art Materials
- Writing Materials
- Manipulatives
- Games
- School Records
- Musical Instruments
3. Create SOPs and storage systems.
Having systems for storing your homeschool materials gives you more control and consistency.
Write down procedures that you and your kids must follow in terms of how and where to store each group of items. This way, your kids will know what is expected of them and there will be less requirement for supervision. Just don't make the process too complicated especially if you have younger kids.
Examples of systems you can create include storing:
- Library books
- Student portfolios
- Computer files
- Assignments
- Completed work
4. Choose appropriate storage solutions.
Your storage solutions will depend on various things such as the types of materials you have, the availability of space, and your budget. You can find many different types of storage solutions in stores like Ikea or even the Dollar Store.
Some homeschool families have really beautiful and well-organized homeschool rooms. You can use them as an inspiration for how you want your space to look. However, don't feel bad if your own homeschool space doesn’t look as amazing as the others due to certain limitations. The most important thing is to use storage solutions that do not only fit your space well but are also durable and affordable for you.
Some examples of storage solutions you can try include:
- Shelves
- Baskets
- Plastic bins
- Folders
- Binders
- Paper Trays
Have a limited budget? Be creative and look for materials already in your house that you can use for storage such as glass jars, plastic food containers, mugs, cardboard boxes, tin cans, and more.
